Is It Safe and Legal to Download Redgifs Videos?

Updated October 6, 2026

Is a Redgifs downloader safe? It can be, if it runs in your browser, asks for no account or app install, and shows no popups or fake download buttons. Whether downloading is legal depends on where you live and what you do with the file: saving a video to watch privately is treated very differently from re-uploading or selling it.

This page covers the safety signs to look for, the legal basics in general terms, and what happens to your data. It is general information, not legal advice.

Is a Redgifs downloader safe to use?

A video file itself is rarely the danger. An MP4 is a plain media file that your phone or computer plays. The risk on downloader sites comes from what surrounds the download.

Warning signs on any downloader site

Warning sign Why it matters
Several “Download” buttons on one page Some are adverts made to look like the real button, and lead somewhere else
A prompt to install an app, extension or “player” first Saving a video does not need extra software. The install is the real goal
The file is not a video If you get an .exe, .apk, .dmg or .zip when you expected an .mp4, do not open it
Sign-up or card details required A simple download does not need your email, phone number or payment details
Popups, new tabs and redirects These can lead to scam pages or unwanted notifications
Requests to allow notifications Used to push adverts to your device later
Countdown timers Usually there to keep you on the page for adverts

If you meet any of these, close the tab. Check that the file name ends in .mp4 before you open it, and never run a file you did not expect.

What our tool does

The Redgifs downloader on this site is a web page. Here is what you can expect from it:

  • Nothing to install. No app, no extension and no account.
  • Real buttons only. You paste a link and press “Get video”. The result shows a preview, the duration, the resolution and a sound badge, with two buttons: “Download HD” and “Download SD”. There are no popups and no fake download buttons.
  • MP4 files. Both buttons give you a standard MP4. Nothing is added to the video, so there is no watermark.
  • Free. There is no sign-up and no daily limit set by us.

If something does not work as described, the troubleshooting guide lists the usual causes.

There is no single answer for every country. The points below are general and hold in most places, but your local law is what applies to you.

Videos on Redgifs belong to the people who made them. Posting a video publicly lets people watch it. It does not hand over the rights to copy and distribute it.

Personal viewing and redistribution are different things

Most of the legal risk sits in what happens after the download.

Use How it is generally treated
Saving a video to watch privately Lower risk in many countries, though rules vary and some places allow less than others
Re-uploading it to another site or account Usually copyright infringement without the creator’s permission
Sharing it in groups or chats Also distribution, and it can raise the same problem
Selling it or using it commercially Clear infringement without a licence
Removing credit and passing it off as yours Infringement, and unfair to the creator

Some countries have private-copying rules that allow saving a copy for yourself. Others are stricter. The site’s own terms of use can also limit downloading. If it matters for your situation, check the law where you live or ask a qualified adviser.

A sensible rule

Download only what you have the right to save, keep it for your own viewing, and do not repost, share or sell someone else’s video without their permission.

Private videos

Our tool works with public Redgifs videos only. It does not fetch private videos, and we do not offer a way around a creator’s privacy settings.

If you are a creator

This site does not host, store or publish any video, so there is nothing here to take down. Removing a video is a request for Redgifs, who host it, and once it is removed or made private there it stops working here at once. If you also want a video blocked from this tool, the DMCA page says what to send.

What about privacy?

A safe download also means your details stay with you.

  • No account. We do not ask for a name, email address or any other personal details.
  • Videos are not hosted or stored. The video is passed from Redgifs to your device. Nothing is kept on our side.

The file ends up on your own device: in Files > Downloads on an iPhone, and in the Downloads folder on Android, Windows and Mac. If you share a device, remember that the file and your browser’s download list stay there until you remove them. The iPhone guide and Android guide show where to find saved files.

The FAQ covers limits, formats and private videos.
