4 Ways to Save Redgifs Videos Compared

Updated October 6, 2026

There are four common ways to save Redgifs videos: an online downloader, a browser extension, screen recording, and a command-line tool such as yt-dlp. For one video at a time on any device, an online downloader is the quickest; for many videos at once on a computer, a command-line tool is the better fit.

Each method has trade-offs. The table gives the short version and the sections below explain it.

Four ways to save Redgifs videos at a glance

Online downloader Browser extension Screen recording Command-line tool
Ease Paste a link, press a button Easy once installed Easy to start, fiddly to get clean Needs some terminal knowledge
Quality The original file, in HD or SD Depends on the extension A re-recording, lower than the original The original file
Sound Kept when the video has it Depends on the extension Depends on device settings Kept when the video has it
Works on phone Yes Rarely Yes Not practical for most people
Needs install No Yes No, it is built into most devices Yes
Many videos at once No, one link at a time Sometimes No Yes

1. Online downloader

An online downloader is a web page. You paste the video’s link and it gives you the file.

With our Redgifs downloader, the steps are:

  1. Copy the video’s link on Redgifs.
  2. Paste it into the box and press “Get video”. On a computer, Ctrl+V anywhere on the page pastes and fetches.
  3. Check the preview, duration, resolution and the “Has sound” or “No sound” badge.
  4. Press “Download HD” or “Download SD”.

You get an MP4 with nothing added to it. HD is the highest quality Redgifs stores for that video, and SD is a smaller file for phones. Both include audio when the original has it. See Redgifs HD vs SD for help choosing.

Good for: saving a video quickly on any device, with no install and no account.

Limits: ours takes one link at a time. It does not do bulk or profile downloads, audio-only files, GIF export, images or private videos. Reddit post links are not accepted, so you need the Redgifs link itself. The guide to saving Redgifs from Reddit shows how to get it.

Online downloaders vary a lot in quality. Some show fake download buttons or push app installs. The signs to look for are in is downloading Redgifs safe and legal.

2. Browser extension

A browser extension adds a download button to the browser or to the video page, so you do not have to copy a link.

Good for: people who save videos often on one computer and want fewer steps.

Trade-offs:

  • You have to install it, and it stays in your browser. Many extensions ask for permission to read the pages you visit, which is a lot of access to give for a download button.
  • They break when the site changes and stay broken until the developer updates them.
  • Mobile browsers mostly do not support extensions, so this is a desktop method.
  • Quality and sound depend on which file the extension picks. Some grab a silent or low-resolution version.

3. Screen recording

Phones, Windows and macOS all have a built-in screen recorder. You start recording, play the video, then stop.

Good for: a last resort when no other method works.

Trade-offs:

  • It is a recording of your screen, not the original file. The picture is re-compressed and limited by your screen, so quality is lower.
  • Sound is not guaranteed. Whether audio is captured depends on your device and its recording settings.
  • The recording can include on-screen controls, notifications and the start and end of your taps, so it often needs trimming.
  • It takes as long as the video is, every time.

4. Command-line tool

A command-line tool such as yt-dlp runs in a terminal. You give it a link, or a list of links, and it fetches the files.

Good for: bulk downloading, scripting and people comfortable with a terminal. This is the method that suits saving many videos in one go, which our tool does not do.

Trade-offs:

  • You need to install it and learn a few commands.
  • It needs updating now and then, because sites change and older versions stop working.
  • It is aimed at computers. Running it on a phone is possible in theory and impractical for most people.
  • There is no preview. You see the result after the file has downloaded.

Which method should you pick?

Use an online downloader for one video on any device, a command-line tool for many videos at once, and screen recording only when nothing else works.

On a phone, the online route is the practical one. The iPhone guide and Android guide show the steps and where the file lands: Files > Downloads on iPhone, and the Downloads folder on Android.

Whatever method you use

The method does not change who owns the video. Videos on Redgifs belong to the people who made them. Save them for your own viewing, and do not re-upload, share or sell someone else’s video without permission. What you download and do with it is your responsibility. This site hosts no videos; creators can read the DMCA page.
